Shed Show

We thought we'd put on an Illustration team exhibition to kick start the year of happenings in the shed...see here for more links to the team and what we do...

Antony House, Torpoint

We trundled over to Torpoint for a visit to Antony House - and we received the warmest of welcomes from the team there - so a huge huge thanks in particular to Brian, Caroline and all the volunteers. 

Our first years had a picnic in the glorious sunshine then drew all afternoon - see below for what they got up to when back in the studio the following day...

Printing!!

The illustration team have enjoyed their printing extravaganza over the last few days - bonding over Little John and Kimber (pop down to the print studio to work out the reference!).  Thanks to India we can't wait to get printing this year!

At Pylon Press we help illustration students by giving them a first chance to see their work in print through the cult of indy publishing.

Illustration programmes at Plymouth College of Art offer a diverse image-making experience resulting in outcomes and contexts such as traditional publishing, independent books, zines and limited prints, through to online publishing and interactive, moving image outputs.

Throughout the programme students are encouraged to extend their drawing skills and the development of their conceptual thinking to progress towards a personal visual language and identity.

A competitive and demanding discipline, we value high levels of imagination and conceptual thinking, alongside problem solving skills and consideration of clients, contexts and audiences.

Interdisciplinary and collaborative practices are explored and professional aspirations are directed through opportunities to engage with national and international competitions and live briefs/commissions. 

Our aim is for students to develop a culturally curious attitude that keeps them aware of contemporary trends and actively engaged in creative communities as they pursue that ‘spark of originality’ that sets them apart from the crowd.

Pylon Press

Pylon Press is a support structure for creativity where as a programme we explore independent publishing through collaborative projects and self authored texts.

Independent Illustration Practice

Our ongoing passion for entrepreneurial practice explored previously through the Illustration Bureau, the Illustration Stuff Fair and the Illustration 109 shop and more recently shops in Drake Circus.

Introduction to Illustration

We kick start the first year exploring fundamental illustration principles - creative problem solving and visual communication - alongside the manipulation of a range of image-based media, materials and techniques.

At its heart, Illustration is storytelling. Illustrators frequently tell stories and convey complex messages or concepts through their image making.

Our students explore the relationship between images and text, and are introduced to the design principles of layout and composition, as well as hand rendering techniques associated with typographic design, with the intention of integrating both image and text within a design context.

Students explore problem solving and creative play with a range of creative print-making processes.  Workshops consist of a series of experimental print techniques, which are designed to develop an understanding and awareness of the processes used.
